FORMULATION OF A NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN

The Department of Climate Change, in collaboration with the Ministries, Departments and Other Bodies specified in the Third Schedule [Regulation 13(1)] be responsible for the formulation of a National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan:

Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change - Formulates policies and implements projects related to environmental protection and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre - Coordinates national efforts for disaster risk reduction and manages responses to disasters.

Mauritius Meteorological Services - Provides weather forecasts and early warnings which are crucial for disaster preparedness and response.

Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency - Focuses on promoting renewable energy sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities - Oversees the energy policy including the integration of renewable energies which impact climate change mitigation efforts.

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)

Mauritian Wildlife Foundation - Works on conservation projects that help protect biodiversity, crucial for maintaining ecosystem resilience against climate change.

Environment Protection and Conservation Organisation (EPCO) - Focuses on environmental education and community-based conservation projects.

Climate Action Network (CAN) Mauritius - A coalition of NGOs focused on advocating for strong climate policies and actions.

Academic Institutions

University of Mauritius - Conducts research and offers courses on environmental science, climate change, and disaster management.

Mauritius Research and Innovation Council - Supports research in technology and innovations that can help in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Private Sector

Insurance Companies - Offer products that mitigate financial risks associated with climate-related disasters.

Consultancy Firms - Provide expertise in environmental impact assessments, climate risk analysis, and disaster management planning.

Renewable Energy Companies - Develop and implement solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects that reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

International Partners

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) - Supports projects and provides technical assistance in areas related to climate change and disaster risk reduction.

World Bank - Finances projects aimed at improving climate resilience and sustainable development.

Global Environment Facility (GEF) - Funds projects that address critical environmental issues including climate change and biodiversity conservation.

Community Leaders and Local Authorities

Municipal Councils - Implement local disaster risk management strategies and participate in community-based adaptation projects.
