Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - Mauritius

Explore insights needed to track environmental indicators, assess policy impacts, and foster sustainable development. This platform can empower decision-makers, researchers, and communities to address the nation’s environmental challenges holistically, ensuring that Mauritius progresses toward an inclusive, high-income, and green future in line with the SDGs.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, represent a global blueprint for achieving a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future by 2030.  For Mauritius, these goals are particularly significant, given its unique environmental vulnerabilities and socioeconomic aspirations. Mauritius, with its rich biodiversity, fragile coastal ecosystems, and reliance on tourism and marine resources, faces distinct challenges including climate change, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and resource management—all of which align closely with the SDGs.

About SDGs

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected objectives adopted by the United Nations in 2015. These goals are designed to achieve a sustainable future by promoting equality, human rights, and justice for all by 2030. The SDGs build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were in place from 2000 to 2015, but they are more comprehensive and apply universally to all countries, regardless of their economic status.

REPUBLIC OF MAURITIUS VOLUNTARY NATIONAL REVIEW 2024

SDG Progress Tracker 2024

The Republic of Mauritius Voluntary National Review (VNR) 2024 report, prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, outlines Mauritius' progress, challenges, and strategies in implementing the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Submitted to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) of the ECOSOC, this is Mauritius' second VNR, following its first in 2019, and reflects its commitment to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amidst a complex global context.

The report highlights Mauritius’ resilience as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) transitioning toward an inclusive, high-income, and green economy. It emphasizes the country's recovery from the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had reversed some developmental gains, and its response to ongoing challenges such as geopolitical tensions, climate change, food and energy insecurity, and difficulties integrating into global value chains. Despite these pressures, Mauritius achieved a 7.1% economic growth rate and a reduced unemployment rate of 6.3% in 2023, showcasing its ability to safeguard livelihoods and sustain recovery.

The VNR process underscores Mauritius' efforts to strengthen institutional frameworks, stakeholder engagement, and data capabilities. The Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) was expanded to include public and private sectors, civil society, and academia, fostering a multi-stakeholder approach. Mauritius reports 75% data availability for SDG indicators, with ongoing efforts to enhance monitoring, evaluation, and statistical processes. The National Steering Committee on SDGs, established in 2021, and the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) within the Ministry coordinate these efforts.

Key achievements include poverty alleviation through a robust welfare system, climate action commitments under the Paris Agreement (e.g., reducing GHG emissions by 40% by 2030), and investments in social protection, health, education, and gender equality. However, challenges persist, including an ageing population, climate-related disasters like cyclones and floods, and the high cost of SDG implementation—estimated at USD 6.5 billion for climate measures alone, with significant reliance on international support.

The report calls for global partnerships, innovative financing, and reforms to the international financial architecture to support SIDS like Mauritius. It emphasizes leveraging science, technology, and innovation to build a sustainable future, aligning with the national vision of leaving no one behind, as reiterated during the SDG Summits of 2019 and 2023. The document acknowledges contributions from diverse stakeholders across Mauritius and Rodrigues, reflecting a collaborative approach to sustainable development.
