  • Plastics and Plastic Wastes
    Theme Page

A world without plastics seems inconceivable today. Global plastic production and utilization have reached amazing figures in the last four decades. This widespread use has been attributed to the various useful properties, plastics offer as a material. Plastics are durable, hence persist into the environment for long periods of time before undergoing degradation or fragmenting into microplastics or nano-plastics. Moreover, with trans-boundary movement of plastic wastes, plastic pollution knows no frontier and thus is recognized as one of the most dreadful global challenges, in the Anthropocene era.Mauritius is not spared from the impacts of plastic pollution. Environmental impacts resulting from mismanaged plastic waste are linked with multi-farious environmental problems such as impacting adversely marine life and terrestrial animals; bioaccumulation of microplastic in the food web; clogging of drains and waterways; proliferations of vector-borne diseases; unsightly environmental landscape; and depletion of non-renewable resources. Thus, combating plastic pollution including in the marine environment, is imperative.

  • Air Pollutants
    Page

Air pollution exerts a devastating impact on various environmental components, encompassing air, groundwater, and soil, while posing a severe threat to living organisms. The ecological ramifications of air pollution are underscored by phenomena such as acid rain, global warming, the greenhouse effect, and climate changes. Monitoring and controlling air pollutants is crucial to safeguarding air quality and protecting human health and the environment. The specific pollutants of concern can vary depending on the region, industrial activities, and local sources of emissions.

  • Air Pollution & Impacts
    Page

In Mauritius, air pollution is caused by a wide variety of substances and processes. Air pollution vary by region and over time due to factors such as changes in industrial activities, transportation patterns, and meteorological conditions. Effective air quality monitoring and pollution control measures are essential to address and mitigate the impacts of these pollution sources. The solution to the air pollution problem can be found if an integrated approach is adopted after proper quantification of the various components in play.

  • Air Pollution, Standards and Regulations
    Theme Page

Air pollution indicators play a crucial role in assessing exposure risks, quantifying economic and social consequences, and identifying vulnerable population segments. These indicators provide valuable data for policymakers, planners, and public health officials to design effective mitigation strategies and improve air quality. Standards and regulations related to air quality and environmental protection are crucial for safeguarding human health, preserving ecosystems, and addressing the challenges posed by pollution and climate change. These standards and regulations can vary by country or region, but there are also international agreements and guidelines that influence and set the framework for national regulations.
