DRR (Lightning and Thunderstorms)

What are thunderstorms?
Thunderstorms are local storms which are accompanied by lightning and thunder and a variety of other hazardous weather phenomena, such as heavy rain and flash floods, damaging winds, hail and tornadoes.

What is Lightning?
Lightning is the result of the electric charge separation generated by the interaction between cloud water and cloud ice in the atmosphere. The most frequent lightning flashes occur within the atmosphere in the form of cloud-to-cloud flashes, but the most dangerous and destructive are the cloud-to-ground flashes.

Lightning strike
Lightning is basically a massive amount of electricity wanting to get rid of its charge as quickly as possible. As a result, it goes to the nearest and easiest thing which is often a tall pole, building or tree.

Lightning Detector

A lightning detector is a device that detects lightning produced by thunderstorms.
The Biral Thunderstorm Detector (BTD) at the MMS is a highly sensitive lightning detector,
that detects lightning flashes within 83 km of the installation site within 2 seconds of its
occurrence.
In Mauritius, one is located at Vacoas station and the other at Plaisance Station
