DRR (Heat & Cold Waves)

Mauritius and its outer islands generally experience a tropical climate, which is marked by mild temperatures throughout the year. Due to this moderate climate, the islands do not typically experience extreme temperature variations that lead to heat or cold waves as seen in more temperate or continental climates. While Mauritius and its outer islands do not traditionally experience severe heat or cold waves, the changing global climate necessitates ongoing monitoring and preparedness for all types of weather extremes. This includes implementing health and safety protocols during periods of unusually high or low temperatures, even if they do not reach the extreme levels seen in other parts of the world.

Heat Waves

  • Occurrence: While Mauritius can experience warm conditions, especially during the summer months from November to April, temperatures are typically regulated by the surrounding ocean. This prevents extreme heat conditions often classified as heat waves. However, increasing global temperatures due to climate change could potentially lead to warmer days that may feel unusually hot for the region.
  • Notable Events: There are no specific records of severe heat waves in Mauritius due to the temperate nature of the island's climate. However, occasional periods of higher than average temperatures do occur, mostly during the peak of summer.

Cold Waves

  • Occurrence: Similarly, cold waves are not a characteristic feature of Mauritius' climate. The winter months from May to October see cooler temperatures, but these rarely drop to levels that would constitute a cold wave.
  • Notable Events: The coldest periods in Mauritius rarely see temperatures falling below 10°C, and this is usually confined to the central plateau during the night. Such conditions are not severe enough to be classified as cold waves.

  • Climate Variability and Trends

  • Climate Change Impact: With the ongoing impacts of climate change, there has been an increasing interest in monitoring temperature trends for signs of unusual temperature events.
  • Adaptation and Awareness: The Mauritian government and environmental organizations are focused on climate adaptation strategies that include awareness about possible increases in temperature and their impact on public health, agriculture, and water resources.
