Monvert Nature Walk

The Monvert Nature Walk, named from Chevallier Antoine de Mon Vert, is both a conservation and recreational project that has seen light in May 2006, consisting of a Visitor’s Interpretation Centre, an Arboretum, a Fernery and two major nature trails spanning on a distance of 2.5 km and 2.8 km respectively. Located at Forest Side, Curepipe, State Land Monvert extends over an area of 72 Ha and is one of the most easily accessible and visited native forest found close to an urban area.

It was once covered with dense native forests with Bois de natte, Manglier vert, Bois manioc as the predominant species. In the early 20th century, the whole region was logged for its valuable native timber species.

The area was subsequently re-afforested with pine and eucalyptus with the exception of an area of 200 acres which still harbours native indigenous plant. Given its richness in biodiversity, the project aimed at protecting remnants of a once dense native forests, knowledge enhancement as well as promoting the social aspect of forests through forest bathing and nature walks.
