National Implementation Plan on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) project

(October 2024 – December 2025)

POPs are very dangerous organic chemicals. They are a global threat to human health and ecosystem.
Under the Stockholm Convention on POPs, Mauritius is committed to eliminate and reduce the use of POPs. Mauritius ratified the convention in 2004.
In 2005, a first National Implementation Plan (NIP) on POPs was prepared for 12 POPs.
In 2025, an Updated NIP, covering the 12 initial POPs as well as the 25 additional listed POPs, have been prepared by the consultancy firm Redsky Technologies Ltd, led by Dr Weber - an international renowned expert who have been involved in the preparation of 40 NIPs out of which 13 were in Small Islands Developing States (SIDS).
The Updated NIP includes an action plan which will be implemented over a period of 10 years.
The implementation of the NIP will require above USD 3.7 million and the funds will be explored mainly from international external sources namely the Global Environment Facility.
