The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership

The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership (BIP) is a global initiative aimed at developing and coordinating biodiversity indicators for various international frameworks, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and others. BIP supports measuring progress towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, enhances indicator use in environmental agreements, and boosts national capacities for implementing and reporting on biodiversity strategies. The partnership comprises over sixty organizations worldwide, focused on providing detailed information on biodiversity trends.

International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species

The IUCN Red List, established in 1964, is the world’s most comprehensive source on the extinction risk of species. It serves as a crucial tool for biodiversity conservation, aiding decision-making for environmental policies and actions. Utilized by government bodies, NGOs, educational groups, and businesses, the Red List informs on species' range, population, and threats, guiding conservation efforts. To date, over 163,000 species are listed, with more than 45,300 at risk of extinction. Efforts continue to expand and update the Red List to better support conservation priorities and actions.

GBIF—the Global Biodiversity Information Facility

This report offers a collection of summary charts, statistics, and additional information concerning the mobilization and utilization of open-access species data via the GBIF network, specific to users and institutions in Mauritius. The metrics presented reflect the status at the time the report was generated, unless stated otherwise. Collectively, the components of this report aim to facilitate and track progress in meeting the information requirements for biodiversity research and support Mauritius' national commitments to biodiversity and sustainable development.

Ocean Health Index

The Ocean Health Index (OHI) is a comprehensive framework developed by scientists to assess ocean health globally and regionally, based on its ability to sustainably provide benefits like food, cultural value, and employment. Since its inception in 2012, the OHI has been used annually to measure ocean health at different scales through OHI+ assessments, which adapt the core framework to local contexts. This human-centric approach evaluates how well oceans meet societal needs and incorporates various indicators into a unified model to give a holistic view of ocean health, addressing both current benefits and future threats.
