Rodrigues - Eco-Economy

The comprehensive efforts in Rodrigues to promote a green economy through strategic investments, policy implementation, and sustainable infrastructure development, aiming to achieve economic growth while preserving the environment are  discussed.

Overview of Sustainable Development Initiatives

  • Rodrigues is actively transitioning towards a green economy by fostering sustainable consumption and production practices across all sectors. This involves engaging entrepreneurs and the broader community in adopting eco-friendly practices. Currently, Rodrigues lacks a single institution that covers all aspects of sustainable development, and there is no consistent mechanism to raise public awareness about sustainability. While training has been provided to 400 entrepreneurs, many face challenges due to financial constraints and limited access to resources necessary for implementing sustainable practices.

Strategic Policy and Projects

  • Rodriguan Authorities have outlined specific policy pathways and strategic actions to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources without causing environmental harm. These strategies aim to balance economic development with environmental preservation. As part of the 2022 Tourism Development Plan, a Green Airport Project funded by the World Bank and the European Union is underway. This project focuses on constructing environmentally sound infrastructure, aligning with international safety standards, and aiming for green airport certification to enhance the competitiveness of the aviation sector.
  •

Environmental and Economic Impacts

  • The green initiatives are designed to increase the competitiveness of Rodrigues in the global market, particularly through sustainable tourism and improved infrastructure. The investments will support food security, sustainable development, and technical assistance in various sectors, including fisheries management and climate-smart technologies. Buildings and infrastructures will be retrofitted to meet environmental standards, and a green certification program will be implemented to strengthen Rodrigues's branding over time.
  •

Water Management and Infrastructure Development

  • To manage water shortages, especially with anticipated tourism growth, the project will invest in enhancing water infrastructure, including desalination plants and new water reservoirs. Plans for improved sanitation and safe wastewater disposal are also part of the strategic developments. The project will assist Rodrigues’s public utility company in improving financial sustainability and in developing regulations and technical standards for water management facilities.

The welfare of Rodrigues's population depends on sustainably using natural resources with minimal environmental impact. The Rodriguan Authorities have outlined policy pathways and strategic actions to achieve this balance, detailed in Table 1(RoM 2022).
